Joanna Thurlow

Raised in small town Newfoundland, one of Jo’s earliest memories is the smell of bread baking in her Nan’s kitchen. She began teaching yoga in 2006, while completing her MA in Spanish at Western University, before moving back to Nova Scotia to open her first yoga studio.

Always a lover of a good challenge, Jo took up baking sourdough bread in 2017 when a friend gifted her a delicious loaf, which she subsequently tried to replicate… and failed miserably! She continued to fail (with increasing frustration) until she decided to approach her baking practice in the same way that she approached her yoga practice - by learning the theory, and then using her intuition, while staying present and abandoning expectations. This led to better bread, and more fun baking it, and this is the perspective she brings to her retreats!

Jo is the co-founder of Modo Yoga in Halifax, Bedford, and St. John’s. She graduated with honours from the Baking and Pastry Arts program at NSCC, and has apprenticed at some of Halifax’s most beloved bakeries.
